The Pub Hub

A Resource for Student Publication Workshop

Usually the section editor will arrange for photos or graphics for a big story. But you as a writer should take a camera to the event and you will find out about photo opportunities and can come up with a great idea for a graphic illustration. Take a list of facts out of a column of text and display it visually in a graphic idea. Please contact your editor as soon as possible with your idea. This will give the graphic artist time to prepare the material.

Rule of thirds
Break photos into nine sections

Balance
Off center (or perfectly centered)
Action photos should be off-cetnered to imply direction
Have a dominant subject and a subordinate object (image above shows a person and a bike); one main subject and something in the background (keep in mind thirds)

Direction
Where does the image naturally grab the eye

“Boring” photos
Buildings
Landscapes with no object of focus
People smiling for a the camera
Blurry shots
People sitting behind desks
People standing behind podiums

Quick Tips
Take hi-res photos
Get shots of people (people are the focus of a newspaper, so show a lot of them)
Get people in action (not just smiling at someone off camera but really doing things)
