Olympics Black Power Salute: 1968, Tommie Smith and John Carlos performed the “power to the people” salute when they took their awards, came at a time when the black community was encouraged to boycott the games. They were suspended from U.S. team because the Olympics were known for neutrality. Similar Nazi solutes in the ‘30s were met with penalization.

Burning Monk: 1963, a protest on the streets of Saigon for Buddhists to have the same rights as Catholics, w/o persecution. Thich Quang Duc never moved a muscle.


Truman wins election: In the 1948 election, Thomas Dewey was expected to win and the Chicago Daily Tribune went to print under that assumption.


New Yorker Obama: “The Politics of Fear,” cartoon by Barry Brit, McCain and Obama supporters were outraged, Editor-in-chief David Remnick: "The intent of the cover is to satirize the vicious and racist attacks and rumors and misconceptions about the Obamas that have been floating around in the blogosphere and are reflected in public opinion polls. What we set out to do was to throw all these images together, which are all over the top and to shine a kind of harsh light on them, to satirize them."


Police Executes Viet Cong: photo by Eddie Adams, police executes a Viet Cong general during Tet Offensive in 1968.


Navy Kiss: Alfred Eisenstaedt photo on 1945 V-J Day (Victory in the Pacific Day). Unclear who was in the picture. Now, it’s a classic.


Iwo Jima American Flag: photo by Joe Rosenthal in 1945, marked the victory of U.S. over Japan in Iwo Jima. Rosenthal accused of staging because he answered yes to such a question, thinking he was be asked about the group shot.


The Unknown Rebel: Tiananmen Square Massacre, 1989, photo by Jeff Widener, large government reform with more democratic reform in government and economic change. The rebel stood in front of the tanks and eventually climbed on one to talk with the man. Secret police took him away and he was never heard from again.


Fire Accident: Stanley Forman, 1977, taking pictures for the Boston Herald. He took several pictures but the latter ones were too shaky.
